Girl’s Rugby Awards
The last of 3 summer development days for girl’s rugby took place at Denbigh Rugby Club on Sunday 16 August in (almost) sunny weather. There was a good turn out of girls, of mixed ages and abilities. After skills sessions the girls were eager to play a game so a modified game was played due to the different ages and abilities of the girls – though some of the younger girls were more than capable of playing against older girls. The girls were joined by some of last year’s regional squad, who came for the awards ceremony but joined in the game, among them Wales U20 player Yasmin Leung, who was happy to pass on her expertise to the younger girls.
After the session the annual regional awards were given out in the clubhouse - the main ceremony had taken place some weeks previously in South Wales but due to exam pressures most of the Gogledd girls had been unable to attend so Nicola Smith, Women's Community Rugby Manager travelled down to Denbigh to present the awards.
Trophies were awarded to both Colwyn Bay U18 & U15 Mermaids for being 'Club of the Year' and Ellen Jones (Colwyn Bay) was presented with her trophy as Gogledd Cymru U18 Player of the Year and Eurgain Llwyd (Nant Conwy) received her trophy as U15 Player of the Year. The regional players who were present were then presented with medals to commemorate their involvement with the regional side.
A surprise award (at least to the recipient!) was then announced - Ann Tilakawardane, Gogledd Cymru U18 girl’s manager, was presented with an award by the WRU for 'Contribution to Women's Rugby 2008 - 2009' throughout Wales.
The day was deemed to be a success as all seemed to have enjoyed it and the regional coaches have added some more names to the list of potential squad members for the new season. |
